This week’s online release of a teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home was an off-the-wall sensation for Sony’s Columbia Pictures racking up 130 million views in its first 24 frenetic hours.RelatedWhat’s Next For Sony’s Crackle? It Could Be A Partnership Or A Sale
The massive response made Tuesday’s trailer debut the biggest digital launch in the history of Sony Pictures, topping the mark set by Spider-Man: Homecoming (116 million views in 24 hours). That July 2017 release went on to gross $334.2 million domestically and $880.1 million worldwide.
The new trailer arrived at a moment when interest in Spider-Man is on the upswing thanks to the critical and commercial success of Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the landmark animated epic that appears poised for a major trophy run after its Golden Globes win.
Curiosity in the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer was stoked even more by the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War, the Disney/Marvel Studios hit that finished 2018 as the year’s top-grossing global release. That film ended with Spider-Man (and half of humanity) crumbling into dust in the wind.
n Far From Home, which reaches theaters on July 5, the wall-crawler is clearly faring much better. Tom Hollandreturns in the title role. Jon Watts directed from the script from Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal produced the film. (Spider-Man is a character shared by Sony and Disney under an unusual pact.)
The Spider-Man: Far From Home cast also includes Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Colbie Smulders as Maria Hill, Marisa Tomei as May Parker, Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes, Zendaya as Michelle Jones, Laura Harrier as Liz and Jacob Batalon as Ned. The cast will also include JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm), as first reported by Deadline.
The teaser trailer shows Peter Parker taking off to Europe with his classmates for a much needed vacation — a pleasant plan that falls apart when spymaster Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits the young traveler to fight elemental monsters on the loose in Europe. The trailer also introduces Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio, a character whose motivations are as enigmatic as his name.
Those hot topics (and young Holland’s growing heartthrob status) gave the Far From Home trailer a strong viral spread. The trailer was shared by fans at a rate twice the frequency of the Homecoming trailer.
